I saw this posted on LinkedIn, and had to pass it on. I think that this is an accurate assessment of what a senior systems admin or engineer should know. I would also add at least one programming language as well, either Java or C probably.

A Celebration of the life of Michael “Flathead” Blanchard will be held on April 14th, 3 pm 8160 Rosemary St, Commerce City. Weary of reading obituaries noting someone’s courageous battle with death, Mike wanted it known that he died as a result of being stubborn,

refusing to follow doctors’ orders and raising hell for more than six decades. He enjoyed booze, guns, cars and younger women until the day he died

Mike was born July 1944 in Colorado to Clyde and Ethel Blanchard. A community activist, he is noted for saving the Dr. Justina Ford house from demolition and defending those who could not defend themselves. He was a Republican delegate, life member of the NRA, founder and President of the Dead Cats MC. He loved music.
Mike was preceded in death by Clyde and Ethel Blanchard, survived by his beloved sons Mike and Chopper, former wife Jane Transue, brother Stephen Blanchard (Susan), Uncle Don and Aunt Cynthia Blanchard(his favorite);

. So many of his childhood friends that weren’t killed in Vietnam went on to become criminals, prostitutes and/or Democrats. He asks that you stop by and re-tell the stories he can no longer tell.

It’s my birthday today! I usually don’t make a huge deal about it, but I do take the time to see where I’m at in life. As my wife and were getting ready to leave the house this morning, I gazed into the bathroom mirror and said “where am I, and where am I going”? My wife rolled her eyes and said “You’re in Lake Ronkonkoma, and you’re going to work”! As luck would have it though, God or some deity, or just fate .. whatever .. intervened on my behalf. There would be no going to work today; a car got wedged on the train tracks making it impossible to get to work on this beautiful 80 degree Fahrenheit day. Score!

So now, at 42, I feel good. I’ve dropped a few pounds and have been at the gym four days a week. I’ve also started working from home a few days a week. Although it hasn’t been long, it’s making a huge difference in my lifestyle. I’m hoping it doesn’t change. I really enjoy my job, and doing it with a good mixture of working at home and going to the office is awesome. I like the face time a few days a week, but not commuting every day allows me more time for myself.

I took a few moments to read last years birthday post. Well, I think the Ph.D is not going to happen. I was gung-ho for it last year, but the cost (about $63,000) doesn’t make it really seem worth it. I may go back for a second masters degree in Math, but it’s up in the air. I’m not committing to it yet.

So - goals for this year:

1- A LOT more fishing
2- Spend a bit more time at the beach
3- Kick ass on a few projects I have going on at work
4- Vacation a bit more (an extra trip this year I think)
5- Continue getting to the gym / eating healthier.

Most people can’t do anything with a degree in psychology unless they have a Ph.D, and even then it’s difficult to find work. So why are you making psych as your major? Five of the college majors with the worst job prospects on this list are related to psychology. Ironically, psychology is the fifth most popular college degree.

So, please stop doing this.
