Chi Lounge on Long Island

Ξ March 29th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

My wife and I attended a 35th Birthday party at Chi Lounge on Saturday night.  I have to say, it was VERY nice.  If I were to ever open my own place, it would be very much like this one.  A relaxed atmosphere, a nice lounge feel to the place, slightly upscale, but not in a snooty way, and good food.  The crowd had a good mix of people and the DJ was good too; not overly loud, but comfortable in the sense that you can talk to the people you’re with.   I think this is one of my better finds in quite a while.  I’m going to give this place a thumbs up and will probably try to get people to go there again with me.  My only wish is that it were closer to my house.

Siemens Technical Support

Ξ March 25th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

My school handed me a TC35 GSM Modem for a project I’ve been working on.  The modem has been giving me problems and the user manual is useless, so I went to the Siemens website and dialled the available tech support number:

800-448-8224 .. I was then redirected to the Enterprise Communications Division:
800-310-6308 (I selected option 1), the nice rep directed me to another number:
888-368-1112 where I was redirected to:
888-368-7711 where I was redirected to:
800-538-8486 where I was redirected to Fujitsu Computers:
800-777-327 - where I was redirected to another Fujitsu number:
800-743-6367 where I was redirected back to Siemens number:
866-608-0685 - which redirected me to:
800-275-6654 which redirected me to
866-608-0685 which directed me to
800-275-6654 which sent me over to DSL Support:
888-264-4554 who sent me to:
972-374-3000 who sent me to
972-852-1000 OR 888-286-9375; the 888 number was out of order, the 972 number had changed to 912-366-0132, so I called them, they sent me to someone named Constances cell phone: 214-695-xxxx (not printed since its a private cell phone), Constance sent me to
425-507-4774 who sent me to
800-241-4453 who sent me to
425-5076-4774 who connected me with the telephone operator for the building.  She couldn’t help me with my TC35 GSM Modem.
so lets count, that was  20 phone numbers from Siemens, non of which could help me with tech support.  Non of which even HEARD of the TC35 GSM Modem.  I will probably never do further business with Siemens.  If the company can’t publish a coherent telephone directory, they probably can’t do much else.  Furthermore, I never did get help for this Siemens product.

Book Reviews

Ξ March 16th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

A few books I’ve recently gotten through:

The QuantsIn his new book, “The Quants,” Wall Street Journal reporter Scott Patterson suggests how this new breed of mathematicians and computer scientists took over much of the financial system—and the damage they inflicted in the 2007 meltdown.”

I used to work in a quant group in 2007 right around the time of the financial meltdown, so I thought that this book was quite interesting.

Street Fighters “Bear Stearns Cos., the 85-year-old Wall Street firm known for its tough trading culture, was rescued from impending bankruptcy by a deal with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. on March 16, 2008 — making Bear the first major casualty of the financial crisis. The firm spiraled from being healthy to practically insolvent in about 72 hours.”

I was supposed to interview with Bear Sterns on Monday March 17th of 2008, I watched with horror on Friday March 14th as Bear Sterns tanked in the market. They called me and asked if I was still interested in meeting on Monday, but I declined. On Friday, they didn’t know that the firm would be sold by Monday. The book discusses all the players, their backgrounds and the entire deal making process over the weekend. I thought the book was facinating.
2 B R 0 2 B Kurt Vonnegut has been becoming one of my favorites. After I read
Breakfast of Champions I was hooked.
