Autumn on Long Island

Ξ September 25th, 2009 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

The last few weeks have been a blast for Rosie and I. We’ve spent a lot of time visiting the vineyards and apple picking on Long Island. This is our first Autumn on Long Island and we’ve been trying to take advantage of all there is to do. We’re hoping to make it out to Orient Point and do some hiking at Connetquot State Park (which is right near our home) before it gets to cold. I’m also thinking of how to decorate the house for Halloween and Thanksgiving. Feel free to send some of your ideas along.

Alarm Systems

Ξ September 25th, 2009 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

We just installed a new alarm system into our home. While I won’t go into the details of mine, I recommend this for everyone. Our neighborhood isn’t a bad place, but homes get broken into all the time everywhere. Check out some of the FBI statistics of burgulary.

Also:

* According to a United States Department of Justice report:
o 38% of assaults & 60% of rapes occur during home invasions.
o 1 of every 5 homes will experience a break-in or home invasion. That’s over 2,000,000 homes!
* According to Statistics Canada, there has been an average of 289,200 home invasions annually over the last 5 years.
* Statistically, there are over 8,000 home invasions per day in North America
* According to Statistics U.S.A., there was an average of 3,600,000 home invasions annually between 1994 and 2000.

It’s kind of spooky to tell the truth. but unfortunatly most people know someone who has been the victim of breaking and entering (or worse).

Getting an alarm system is an important first step in a security plan for your home. Implemented with other methods, it increases your safety.

“Auto Tune” and “Pro Tools”

Ξ September 14th, 2009 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Blog |

I was peeved to find out that Kanye West interupted Tonya Swift on the MTV Music awards last night. I don’t listen to either of these “artists”, but what irks me is that Kanye West who uses Auto Tune has no business throwing stones at any one elses work.
Auto Tune and Pro tools are software packages that are used to run vocals and instruments through to correct pitch. Essentially, if you can’t sing, you can attach the auto tune software to your mic, and sound perfect. The problem is that most singers use it today.

This is a great place to start finding out about auto tune:http://mog.com/Apraxia/blog/1254083.

I personally think that there should be a boycott against anyone who makes money in the music industry, who passes themselves off as an “artist”, but requires auto tune to actually sing. Unfortunatly, there is no definitive list of artists who use this product. As a result, BiffSocko.com will begin a compiliation of artists that use this. BiffSocko.com cares about artistic expression and will gladly contribute to this effort to weed out the folks who have no business being in the music business.

Details of the list will follow in subsequent posts.

Getting ready for school again

Ξ September 10th, 2009 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

I’m all registered and set to start school on Monday.  I’m taking Concepts and Structures in Internet Computing this semester. I have the same course instructor that I did for Database Management Systems. She’s an excellent professor so I’m looking forward to being in her class again.

Aside from school, I’ve been enjoying life out here on Long Island. I found a sensational steak house called Pace’s Steak House. It’s a wonderful find. One of the best steaks around anywhere. Rosie is still talking about it.

OK, off to bed now .. I’ll keep everyone updated here. Stay tuned for Monday or Tuesday’s blog about he class..

Holiday weekend plans on LI

Ξ September 4th, 2009 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

Not a lot of plans this weekend. Rosie and I tend to stay home on the holiday weekends .. mostly because everyone else goes away then.

This weekend will be spent mostly working on my Honey Do list. The house looks like a disaster, so there is plenty to do. I’m guessing that it will be a relief to get back to work on Tuesday.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Internet = 40 years old

An interesting interview with one of the founders of the Internet:

Leonard Kleinrock remembers the day it began and knows what he’d do differently now

This fellow was there for the very first packet to get sent across a network .. AND there for the very first remote connection. as very impressive guy.
