My friend Hyena, sent me a screen shot. I made one too (running FVWM but with the Gnome tool bar). UNIX geeks love screenshots because the graphical application is not part of the kernel like it is in windows. This means that you can run any number of windows managers, and most of these are configurable by shell scripts or via complex configuration files. Systems people love to tweek all the options to make snazzy windows managers, and they also love to show them off.

People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks - great book. About a woman who restores books. It’s about her, and the history of the book. It’s a great book.

Those of us American born technologists HATE the H1-B program started by our govt. to allow foreign programmers into the US to fill technology jobs at a very cheap price. This started during the late 1990’s in the middle of the dot.com boom.
We technologists found that many of the coders from overseas often didn’t have a great deal of skills, and they came to the US in droves to claim jobs. It kept skilled IT salaries down.
At last the govt. seems to be reigning in the program. There have been many imigration abuses that will hopefully either shut the program down all together OR set up close regulation to the program.

I’ve been watching the senate hearing regarding TARP with the CEO’s of all the major banks that accepted the funds. Most of the Senators were Democrats, though there were a few Republicans. I’ve come to the conclusion that most of the Senators are functional idiots. Seriously. Some of them could actually pass as “short bus” candidates. These guys should probably wear hockey helmets.
Most of the Senators asked questions, and when they got answers they didn’t actually know enough to understand the answers. Furthermore, many of the questions asked were dumb. The senators mostly did grandstanding.
You can see most of the testimony here on CNBC
You’ll note that each of the bank stocks were sharply up during the testimony. The CEO’s kicked Senate ass.

Ouch. I’m sure glad I don’t work there. They plan to cut more then 35,000 jobs over the next three years. The stock is tumbling because there are fears that Bank of America will become Nationalized.
I once worked for a large “Bank In America” myself. The place that I worked for wasn’t all that great. Perhaps some of the people I USED to work with at a “Bank In America” are now working at Bank of America (that would be ironic). Perhaps some of THEIR jobs are some of those 35,000 jobs about to be cut. Especially now that BofA has purchased Merill Lynch.

I downloaded VMware Server the other day. It took a day or so to get it working. Apparently there are a few known bugs that are not very well documented. At any rate, I’ve decided to build a few VM’s. I started with FreeBSD and the beta copy of Windows 7. I’m impressed with Windows 7 thus far. The installation was simple and it was done well. The installation is much faster then the FreeBSD install that I started at the same time. Anyway, I’ll be leaving updates here as I make my way through these products.
