Housing

Ξ October 30th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

so, many of you know that I’ve sold my co-op in Queens.  My wife and I thought that would be the hard part, but finding a new home hasn’t been easy.  We know WHERE we want to live, in terms of town and area, and we’ve had a close encounter with a purchase, but something happened to make it fall though. So, we’ve ended up renting an apartment. We got a month to month lease in the event that we find a home, but for the most part we’re happy to wait out the market a little longer.  We expect interest rates to fall soon, and housing costs to lower in Dec and Jan.  We’ll see what happens.  It’s a crazy market.

The apartment is kind of nice.  It’s a much shorter commute to work, and the monthly carry costs are about half of what the co-op is.    Anywho, we expect to be there for a few months and stow away as much savings as we can.

SO .. our projected moving date is Nov 29th .  Our home phone number will be changing, so contact us if you need it.

Zima discontinued

Ξ October 20th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

An era has ended. MillerCoors ends production of Zima. Can you believe it? That drink from the 80’s that wasn’t quite beer and not quite a wine cooler is now gone forever. Now highschool kids everywhere will have to seduce one another with beer. Metrosexuals everywhere will have to switch to either apple martinis or cosmopolitans. No longer will they have the option to belly up to the bar, and in their most masculine voice say “Give me a Zima please”. Yes, those days are now officially gone, along with women wearing shoulder pads, the mullet and huge 80’s hair

Rubik’s Cube

Ξ October 15th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

I’ve recently been working with a theoretical mathmatician who’s doctorial thesis was partially on Solving Rubik’s Cube. It’s kind of renewed my interests in solving the puzzle. There are many websites now that claim to have different solutions, but I’ve resisted the temptation to read any of them. I’ve gotten close a few times, with only one or two pieces out of place on each side. After discussing possible solutions with my collegue, I think I’m well on my way.

i had to turn the comments section off for a while.  The spam was killing me.  Every  time I log in to write a post, I have more then 500 emails to sift through in moderation.  Most of them are spam and I end up doing “bulk moderation” to get rid of them. I hope to re-enable the comments soon.

Roosevelt Island - our search for an Apt.

Ξ October 13th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

It looks like we’ve narrowed our search to two or three places. 1) an apt. complex in Kew Gardens or more likely 2) Long Island City or 3) Roosevelt Island. The later two are basically one stop on the subway to Manhattan. We’re hoping to know for sure in a few days. We’re coming close to our closing date on th co-op we’ve sold. Basically we’ll end up wherever we can get the shortest lease.  We’re anxious to get back into the house market.  In just a few short months we went from being in a sellers market to being in a buyers market.  Naturally, Rosie and I are thrilled to death.  We feel that if we wait it out for a few more months we’ll get even better interest rates and the price of homes are expected to keep dropping.  Whoot!

Our search for an apartment took us to Roosevelt Island this weekend. I’ve never been there before, so it was an interesting trip. Roosevelt Island is an island in the East River between the Island of Manhattan and Queens. Technically, Roosevelt Island is part of Manhattan, but it has a very different feel to it. Sort of a world unto itself. Through public transportation, you can take the F train or the Roosevelt Island Tramway. Roosevelt Island also has its own bus system that takes you all over the island for $.25. The island is only about 2.5 miles long (if that), and in about %70 parkland. So, you get the feeling that living there is not actually like living in Manhattan, though technically it is. And getting to the actual Island of Manhattan takes under 5 minutes.

If we decide to go there, it’s going to be great to have that kind of commute to work for a while, and give me the opportunity to hang out a bit more often. Good Times indeed.

We were in Long Island City last weekend and we scoped out a few places there too. LIC was also outstanding. In either circumstance, I think we’ll be happy

no house after all

Ξ October 4th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

Hola readers. It turns out that the purchase of our house on Long Island fell through. We came very close to signing the contract, but we felt that there were a few things that the owner should do before we purchased it, like get the CoO’s. We felt that though the home passed the engineers inspection, it wouldn’t pass the county inspection based on some of the decks that were attached to the home. The owners refusal to get the CoO’s led us to believe that it would cost thousands of dollars go get the home up to spec. In the long run its probably for the best anyway. We feel lucky that we sold our home towards the top of the market. Since we have to get out of this home by mid-November to early December, we’ve decided to rent an apartment for a few months while we look for a new home. We feel that housing will drop another %10 over the next few months as will interest rates. In the meantime we’re looking at apartments in Manhattan, Long Island City, and Roosevelt Island. We’re looking at this as a great way to spend a few months while waiting around. We’ll be close to work, and lots of activities. Expect many stories going forward.
