a few things to report in about I guess. 1) my friends Joe & Anne had a baby over the weekend. It’s their third girl. Rosie and I are headed out to see her this evening. I’m told that everything came out ok so .. congrats Anne and Joe. 2) Rosie and I went with Jimmy and Andria to see ZZ Top and the Pretenders. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of either band, but it was a fun night out anyway.

my gig at BOA starts in one week. I’ve been reading up on my statistics. I sure the first few weeks are going to be tough. Truthfully, I’m glad to be out of JPMC. This isn’t a jab at the people I work with or the bank itself. The folks I deal with there have been very nice, and the investment bank is outstanding. I highly recommend them. The problem is that the work is getting quite repetitive. I definitely need a change of pace, so I’ve decided to take Thursday and Friday off before starting at BOA. Kinda clear the head out a bit.

My New Gig

Ξ July 18th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

I’ve been preparing for my new job and the logistics of leaving Wall Street for the mean streets of midtown changes a few things for me.  For one thing, I had to leave Gleason’s Gym.  I’m a little sad about this, but there’s no way I’d be able to work out and get to work on time.  Instead i joined a new gym near my house and will find a boxing gym to work out at in Queens someplace.  I figure I can do it a few evenings a week.

I’ll also have to stop taking the LIRR to work.  The new job is near Grand Central Terminal, so going to Penn Station, then going up town one stop and then heading across town doesn’t make sense.  Instead I’ll have to start taking the express bus again.

I’m getting excited about the new challenge.  My first day is on July 30th.  In the meantime I’ve about finished up and documented my work at JP Morgan Chase.  Anywho, I gotta get a few more things done.  I’ll update in a few days.

I’m a Quant!

Well, as you know, I’ve been looking for a new gig. After a few weeks of working with recruiters and a few hot days spent in a business suit, I have accepted a new offer. It came down to four jobs at three investment banks, but I think I made the right decision. It’s a one year contract with the option to go perm after the year. I’ll be a Software Engineer with the Quantitative Strategies Group for a giant bank. Essentially, I’ll be working on a very small team of mathematicians and software engineers, to develop systems that will handle trading based on computer algorithms. It’s kind of like being a Rock Star in Computer Programming.
The departement is essentially a think tank for an investment bank; figuring out better ways to trade positions, from a computational perspective. So .. I’ll be leaving the Wall Street area for the first time in about 10 years, to see if I can make it on the mean streets of midtown.

July 4th

Ξ July 5th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

Happy belated July 4th. Rosie and I went up to my sister’s place yesterday. Larry cooked WAY to much (not that I’m complaining). Needless to say, we were stuffed to capacity. Some of Lynn and Larries friends were there also. After we ate, Rosie and I took a walk down to the Long Island Sound. It’s about a block from Lynn’s house. If you look at this map here, my sister is on the Ct. side, right near the island off the coast of Milford.

Anyway, we watched a movie and headed back. I was surprised at all the fireworks in Queens, especially around my area. I haven’t heard any fireworks in the weeks before July 4th, so I assumed there wasn’t a lot of them around. Boy, was I wrong. The fireworks went on through the night in Glen Oaks. They really didn’t bother me. I would have stayed outside to see them, but it was raining and since I had to be at work in the morning, I opted to stay in doors.

The job search continues. I won’t mention anything further until I have an offer in hand, but it shouldn’t be long now.

I Live for Weekends

Ξ July 3rd, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blog |

I’ll repeate that. I live for weekends! Monday through Friday seems to be crammed with work, the gym and running errends. While I treasure every moment of my life, some moments I tend to treasure more then others. Say .. cleaning the bathtub vs. eating cotton candy. Weekends are the chance I get to do the things I really like to do.

My cousin Robert graduated from High School last week, so my Uncle John and Aunt Joan threw him a bit of a shindig at Cafe on the Green. It was nice seeing my family. I haven’t seen many of them since the wedding so we had a bit of catching up to do. In the evening I went to my parents house where we watched the dogs for them. Brownie gets freeked out by fireworks, so we don’t like to leave them alone around the 4th of July. Shakespeare seems to be doing ok as well. He seemed chipper during our visit and was happy to sit out on the front lawn for a while.

My parents celebrated their 40th wedding annversary over the weekend. We (My sister Lynn, Rosie and myself) took them to see I Love You, Your Perfect, Now Change” and to dinner at Smith and Wollensky. It was a good evening out. As usual, the Murphy clan was the loudest in the place. *sigh* you can’t take us anywhere.
